They Marched Across the Valley Green

They marched across the valley green,
A ragged host in gray.
Before them fell the blue and gold
Along the dreary way.

They fought a bloodless battle as
The enemy took flight
And filled our streets with gentle singing
Long into the night.

But in the morning meadowlarks
Announced that while we slept
Reinforcements from the west
Had slowly eastward crept.

Now blue and gold reserves were seen
Across the valley green,
While the army of the storming gray
Was nowhere to be seen.
